The Newfoundland is a massive, sweet-natured working dog bred for water rescue, famous for its patience and devotion. Calm and gentle, the 'Nanny Dog' is wonderful with children and eager to please, which makes it responsive to kind, reward-based training. Because of its enormous size, teaching leash manners and polite greetings early is essential before it grows too strong to guide. Newfoundlands are sensitive and dislike harsh handling.
