Which dog breed is right for you?
Tell us about your home, your week and your family. We'll match your answers against 50 popular breeds and explain each suggestion.
Where will your dog live?
How the matching works
Each breed is scored on traits that matter for everyday life: size, energy and exercise needs, how easy it is to train, how it does with young children and other dogs, shedding, grooming, barking, adaptability, affection and watchdog instinct. Your answers set what you need; breeds lose points for every trait that falls short, weighted by how much it matters (a young child at home counts more than a little extra fur).
Trait ratings come from the American Kennel Club breed profiles; trainability blends the AKC's rating with our own, and exercise needs come from our breed guides. Breed traits describe tendencies, not guarantees — individual dogs vary, and mixed-breed dogs from a shelter can be wonderful matches too. Meet the dog, ask the breeder or rescue about their temperament, and plan for training from day one.
